Have you ever watched your favorite beauty influencer do a makeup tutorial and absolutely fell in love with the look? You’re super excited. You sit down at your makeup table, grab the products they’re using (you’re feeling pretty good at this point) and start to follow along. But somewhere along the 5-minute mark, you notice it’s just not looking the same. What happened?
Firstly, and most importantly, you haven’t done anything wrong. They are very experienced working on their own faces. And what I mean by this is, they have done their own makeup so many times, practicing over and over, that they know exactly what looks good and what doesn’t. They know their eye and face shape, skin tone and complexion type. So, for example, if they are a cool tone and you are a warm tone, the techniques will work for both of you but not the color choices. And if they have a darker skin tone and yours is very light, the color choices, say for eyeshadows, will look totally different.
Secondly, they know makeup products. They know what the different brushes and accessories are as well as the different types of makeup. And while some may use a product for the first time on camera, most have a very comprehensive understanding of makeup, makeup accessories and makeup brushes and this is simple using a different brand for the first time, not a product type.
Thirdly, they use professional cameras, filters and studio set ups. Whereas some of us might use a lighted makeup mirror, the vast majority use just the bathroom or bedroom lighting, which is not the most flattering.
And fourthly (and maybe the most crucial), they have the ability when they do their videos to stop and start, to correct mistakes and edit out what doesn’t look good or what they don’t like. And although most makeup influencers are very talented and gifted makeup artists, they probably don’t put on their “video” makeup faces as perfectly in one take as is represented and in the time frame that is represented, which of course will send very confusing and frustrating messages when we try to copy them.
Which brings us here. So that is what this book is for. To provide you with foundational knowledge, that if necessary, you can build upon. We understand there are a lot of products available that are not included in this book, that is intentional. The purpose of this book is to lay a foundation that you can use every day. Because if we don’t have a clear starting point, confusion, frustration and lack of confidence will easily ruin what should be a fun and stress-free process. So, my desire with this book, is that your makeup routine finally be filled with the confidence and joy you deserve.
